Aktion Club helps Bay St. Louis effort |
The Aktion Club of Moore
County, NC, started its 2005-06 year off with a timely community service project
of preparing health kits for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
At their Oct. 4 meeting,
club members, assisted by local American Red Cross volunteers Susan Holmes and
Frank Smither, packaged 50 health kits consisting of towels, washcloths, combs,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and nail files. Also assisting in the project
were Kiwanis sponsors Ed Hitchings and Wendy Russell from the Kiwanis Club of
the Sandhills and Ron and Ginny Richmond of the Seven Lakes (NC) Kiwanis.
The kits were delivered
to Bill Smith Ford in Southern Pines, NC, where donations like this and other
items were being collected for the residents of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, the
adopted town of Moore Friends for Mississippi. Residents of Bay St. Louis who
were left homeless after Hurricane Katrina are in the process of moving into
mobile homes and remain in need of everyday home furnishings.
The Aktion Club is in its 12th year of community service in Moore County. The first club of its kind in North Carolina, Aktion is sponsored by the Seven Lakes Kiwanis and Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills and The Arc of Moore County. The club meets monthly at Sandhills Alliance Church in Pinehurst and in addition to performing community service, the club conducts an annual fundraiser to raise money to benefit a selected charity. Last year, with proceeds raised during a Joe Corbi’s pizza kit fundraiser, a contribution was made to United Way of Moore County.
